Section 7Safety and referral protocol
Immediate danger
When a person appears in immediate danger or reports imminent self-harm, violence, abuse, exploitation, stalking, severe symptoms, crime in progress, or medical emergency: stop the lesson; encourage local emergency services; obtain only information needed to respond; involve the designated safety lead; follow legal duties; document objectively; notify insurer and counsel when appropriate. Do not attempt spiritual diagnosis or rely on prayer alone.
Response levels
| Level | Examples | Required response |
|---|---|---|
| A — Emergency | Imminent self-harm, violence, medical crisis, active abuse or crime, immediate danger. | Stop session; call or direct to local emergency services; involve safety lead; preserve minimal facts; follow legal reporting and insurer notice. |
| B — Serious but not clearly imminent | Threats, stalking, exploitation, severe mental-health symptoms, abuse allegation, unsafe home or workplace. | Pause teaching; encourage qualified local help; consult safety lead/counsel; do not investigate; document referral and follow-up. |
| C — Outside scope | Legal dispute, diagnosis request, detailed trauma, financial or professional advice, allegations requiring evidence. | Explain boundary; provide neutral referral categories; return to education or end session. |
| D — Routine pastoral/educational | Questions, disagreement, grief without danger, leadership concern, general prayer request. | Teach within scope; encourage healthy church and qualified support; no diagnosis or guarantee. |
